Visit Kirkmichael & Strathardle
Not only a cross-country link that makes touring options tempting, this area between Glenshee and the main A9 is also a great choice for a get-away-from-it-all break.
While the lower part of the strath is a mix of farm and woodland with the hills above, the western section on the way to Pitlochry crosses open rolling moorland.
The small communities of Ballintuim, Kirkmichael and Enochdhu are starting points for exploring the leisure choice here. Anglers enjoy the River Ardle for its trout and salmon, walkers can pick up the Cateran Trail and explore either the valley down towards Bridge of Cally, where there are also fine low level walks through the Blackcraig Forest. The Cateran Trail also takes in some wild country leading through to Glenshee. (This part is also on the Cateran ‘Mini Trail’ starting from Kirkmichael.) There are also great birdwatching and wildlife opportunities. It’s the sort of place you see hen harriers – amongst other raptors – without even getting out of the car!
And of course with the easy access to other routes to east and west, it makes a great base for tourers and golfers – especially as there are 90 courses within a 90 minute drive!
